Green card lottery update

We are still busy notifying the winners of last year's lottery DV-2007. By now, more than 800 winners have received their notification via The American Dream. Since the end of April the US government has sent out roughly 80% of winners notifications, ca. 20% are still missing. So we still keep our fingers crossed. We expect the final results toward the end of July and will, of course, inform all our customers as soon as it is in.

Toward the end of last year, the German media spread the rumor that the green card lottery was about to be canceled (we told you about this in one of our newsletters.) This was, however, only a bill drafted by the House of Representatives that does not have the power of passing this all by itself. The bill was more of a complete restructuring of American immigration law anyway, the green card lottery is only a very small part of that. A number one debate topic in the US is currently border security to Mexico, the potential legitimization of illegal immigrants in the US and a new guest worker program.

At the end of May the US Senate has passed an alternative draft to the one of the House of Representatives. This one is considerably more liberal and quite clearly states that the green card lottery is NOT canceled. The program may have to undergo some changes, but the lottery itself would remain in effect. Since even President Bush supports this bill, the ensuing debate in Congress will probably not lead to a cancellation of the lottery.

However, the debate may continue all summer before the two Houses can reach an agreement. This means, we don't expect any changes for the next lottery next fall. There is still a certain risk, however, that this lottery might be the last, at least under the old regulations.
