American Candy

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

burgerRight now I am totally addicted to american recipes. No matter, if dinner, dessert, breakfast or whatever – I love cooking and baking american style. This addiction actually began to grow long before we won the Greencard. But since our visit to Florida last year I can’t control myself!

Today Flo and me went shopping for american candies to decorate our wedding venue with. We were kind of devastated afterwards, because we didn’t find what we were looking for. So I thought it would be nice to even eat american afterwards and I ended up making some burgers! My burger technique is not perfect, yet, but I am working on it. I tried putting the cheese directly in the burger pattys for the first time today and it tasted gorgeous! This week I also did cinnamon rolls and double chocolate cupcakes, which were both delicious! Cupcakes are actually a big thing for Flo and me, because Flo proposed to me with a ring on top of super cute cupcakes!

The best recipe I tried out in the last months was for an Oreo Cheesecake, which is super easy to make, but tastes crazily good! If you wanna try it yourself, here is the recipe!

OREO CHEESECAKE

7 oz. Oreo Cookies
3.5 oz. Butter
9 oz. White Chocolate
3.5 oz. Creme Fraiche
21 oz. Creme Cheese
1 Pack Vanilla Sugar
3.5 oz Powdered Sugar

Crust:
- Preheat oven to 360°F
- Crush cookies
- Melt butter and combine with cookies
- Press into loose bottom pie pan
- Bake for around 10 minutes

Filling:
- Crush chocolate, add Creme Fraiche and melt on low heat
- Steer Creme Cheesen, Vanilla and Powdered Sugar in a bowl
- Mix with cooled down Chocolatecream
- Turn filling in crust and spread evenly
- Place in fridge for 6 hours

Finale:
- Loosen cheesecake by running knife around edges and release sides of pan
- Grate rest of chocolate and decorate cheesecake

I hate soccer!

iStock_000006506390XSmallGermany is going crazy, only I am not! I will make it official now: I am not cheering for the german team! Actually I am not cheering for any team, because I am not into soccer at all. And I would go as far as to say that for me soccer championships are even worth than carnival! I can not understand why people, who most of the year or even the most time of their lives do not give a shit about soccer, suddenly act like lunatics when they hear the name „Lukas Podolski“!

I used to work at a sports mag and I could somehow understand the passion with which my male colleagues loved their favourite sport. But only, because those guys had been into soccer since their births, I guess! Actually I always hope that Germany loses a game and gets kicked out of the championships so that I don’t have to cope with all that soccer stuff following me everywhere anymore!

But you know what: At the next European Soccer Championship in 2012 I won’t have to worry about that soccer anymore, because I will be far far away from all the crazyness! And be nearer to sports I love like Motocross, Ice Hockey or Skateboarding! God Bless America!

Interview from hell!

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

iStock_000000355468XSmallSo, it’s finally time for me to tell you about our Greencard interview at the american consulate in Frankfurt. This day is not a day that I love to remember, but I can’t forget it neither! Okay, you know how the day started, so right now we are at the point where Flo and I were again sitting in the waiting area of the consulate. At the time we were waiting, there were three people doing the interviews. I prayed that we won’t get to take to the woman that looked the meanest. But guess what: It was her, who called our number!

Before the interview we had read that you can ask for a translator, but we chose not to, because our english is good. So, we went up to the window and handed over all the forms we had to. The woman started to ask Flo some basic infos and than came to the question that changed all: When did you marry? Flo was very excited at that day and by accident told her a wrong date. I corrected it and with that pissed off that woman seriously! She nearly yelled at me that I did not have to say a word at all, because I was only his wife and that I would get serious problems, if I would again! As you may imagine that didn’t calm down Flo a bit and the interview went on very bumpy! The woman asked some more questions about our wedding, looked at our marriage certifacte and than said that we had to hand in wedding pictures after the interview. She told us that she didn’t exactly believe that we were married for real and that she had to check on that fact!

Than she asked Flo about the money he would bring to the US. He told her (it is a high figure for our age I guess and much more than you need to bring for the application) and the woman seriously had the nerves to laugh and ask us (sorry, ask Flo), if he thought that he could live from that money for real! Before Flo could answer that question, she gave us a very mean look, asked us if we had any more questions and than told us to go, because we were done!

Imagine you standing there like shaking with horror, because this interview could decide about your future and knowing nothing! She didn’t tell us, if we still had a chance to get the Greencard or what would happen to our passports!

As you may see in the post below we do have our Greencards! It actually took our passports about 4 weeks to arrive home – but still this day till now was our worst in this whole Greencard process!

I told you before: This is not how the usual interview goes, so please don’t be scared! But: Prepare yourself for that interview the best you can and take this thing very serious! Because the staff of the american consulate obviously does!
