Stepping into German footprints

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

einladung_hOne of the most famous german woman living in the US is model Heidi Klum. Heidi Klum and I do not only share our home Country, but also the same home town. We both were born and raised in Bergisch Gladbach, which is just outside of Cologne. I am not a big Heidi fan, but I do love something she does a lot! It’s this every year a new wedding thing. As you may know she marries Seal every year in different style weddings.

I will say yes to Flo for the second time next Saturday. On August 28 2009 we married in a civil ceremony, this year our best friends will pronounce us man and wife for the second time. And next year we may marry in Vegas on the same day. A Vegas wedding was always Flo’s dream – actually it used to be the only wedding Flo could imagine for himself. And we also promised our american friends Jeana and Scott another wedding, because they won’t be able to attend this year’s.

I actually would love to say yes to Flo every year, because I love weddings and I love him. And it would be kind of cute to bring this half german tradition of Heidi Klum to the US again! I actually do have a theme for our fourth wedding, which I would definitely celebrate as a Halloween wedding with everyone getting dressed up and me and Flo being a zombie bride and groom.

So question is, if that fourth wedding will be celebrated in the US or in Germany depending on where we will have our lifes, our friends and our hearts in two years!

Lucky!

iStock_000009284226XSmallYesterday we went to my bosses BBQ party and talked to one of my colleagues. It is no wonder that at some point the conversation came to our Greencard win and surely my colleague wanted to know everything about it! When we finished our story he brought up a very good point, that we sometimes just forget to be thankful for!

It is not a natural thing to win that Greencard in the perfect situation we did win it in! We have each other! We are young! We have careers! We have no children, yet! And we wanted to get married anyways! What time would have been more perfect for this win than the this?

When we got that one special E-Mail we didn’t even have to think about whether we do it or not. We knew that we would get married! And we knew that this was the right choice! Sure we both had our doubts about anything, but I can’t imagine the doubts we would have had, if Flo won this Greencard a few years earlier or later!

My colleague told us that he envies us for this chance! Not only the chance of having the Greencard, but the chance of being able to move without giving it a second thought! At that moment I felt kind of ashamed. Since we got the Greencard I always am more than thankful for that chance! But I do not often think about the great situation I am in! It is not natural to have a partner that dreams the same dream, that comes with the same background and that wants the same future!

This again shows me that Flo and I are just perfect together. And that this us our perfect little dream! Now I am more than curious to see, if this little dream will blow up and be the dream of a lifetime or if it will only last for a few years and stay in our hearts forever as this tiny little dream we both had! Either way I will always be thankful! For Flo and for the Greencard!

A lot of stress, no worries

SavethedateRight now I am super busy at work and with planning our wedding, which is in two weeks! Even if there always is someone that reminds you of that whole Greencard thing or asks questions about it, I currently simply have no time to worry about anything besides work and the wedding. Actually this is some kind of a nice change, because in the last weeks I worried like crazy about everything and had crazy nightmares.

Besides stress I luckily do have the best medicine against emmigration worries you can have: my best friend Petra. Petra moved to London three years ago with one suitcase and only a bit of money in her pockets and now is really happy, has a nice life and is some kind of a London girl. Petra always gets me down on earth when my worries get outrageous. She always tells me that if you wanna do this real hard and if you bring a few requirements with you everything will work out fine.

They should only feature people like Petra on those emmigration shows on TV. She didn’t move abroad blue-eyed and didn’t give up when the times were hard. This is what I call a real emmigrant! Sometimes I wish to be more like Petra. She is so open-minded and cool about everything – I sometimes could use a bit of her character to make my life easier and get rid of some things that make it hard for me all the time.

Even if I am not Petra, I right now think that we are on a good way to achieve a happy and good life abroad, too. And the best thing is that even if I will move a thousand miles further away from my best friend, I will always have her by my side – especially when I need some friendly emmigration advice!
