The best week so far

DMVIt is already Sunday and I feel like I have to give you an update on one of the most exciting weeks we had so far. This was our fourth week in the US and finally things begin to happen. The best news came on Monday, when I actually got a job offer. I will start my new job tomorrow and am really happy and excited about it. I don’t want to talk about details right now, because it might be bad luck to write about it before I even began working. But I definitely will keep you updated.

The next nice thing happened on Wednesday. We went to the DMV to take the written test for our driver’s license and both passed. I actually wasn’t expecting that, because I just began studying on Tuesday night. I will tell you more about our visit to the DMV in my next post, because I think it is worth writing a whole post about it.

We went to the Sony Studios to sit in the audience of Rules of Engagement on Wednesday night. If you’ve never heard of it: It is a sitcom about two couples and different states of marriage and love. It is a real fun show, but I have to say that sitting in the audience for 5 hours was a bit too much. The actual filming didn’t take more than maybe 2 of the 5 hours, so we spent the most time listening to the jokes of the audience entertainer. If you are a sitcom fan I suggest that you take the chance to sit in the audience of a show, but be warned: It is a long ride!

We spent the whole Thursday and Friday driving around the neighbourhood checking out apartments and finally had kind of a break-through on Friday. We found an apartment near Runyon Canyon that we both like and can afford. We applied for it yesterday, so please keep your fingers crossed for us!

This is it so far, because I now have to watch the Oscar’s and get ready for my first work day tomorrow.

Beverly Hills, 90212

Beverly HillsToday we started our hunt for an apartment. We actually didn’t officially start to look for a place to live, because we first want to know where we will find work, but we thought it would be a good idea to look at some apartments anyways. If our future jobs allow us to, we would love to stay in the neighborhood we live in right know. We totally fell in love with West Hollywood and don’t wanna miss the nice restaurants, shops and Canyons on our doorstep.

Our first viewing took us to Beverly Hills. Not to Beverly Hills 90210, but at least to an area with the zip code 90212. This actually wasn’t supposed to be our first viewing. We wanted to check out an open house a few streets away from us first, but we immediately walked away when we saw the house. So we drove up to Beverly Hills (yes, not West Hollywood, but still) and met with a realtor. I actually expected the realtors over here to be really pushy, but to our surprise this realtor opened our viewing with the sentence “This is a nice place to look at, but you might get something nicer for your money in West Hollywood”. He told us that people normally move to Beverly Hills for tax reasons or because of the schools and that if this wasn’t a fact in our case we should search for a place elsewhere.

We still looked at the apartment, which was kind of cute. But the bathroom and the kitchen were way too old and too small and there wasn’t a laundry facility on-side, which is not what I am looking for.

Even if this day wasn’t a success I am happy that our first viewing wasn’t a total disaster and that we now know that Beverly Hills is not what we want. I will definetely keep you posted about our future viewings and till then wish you a wonderful Sunday evening (or Monday morning) from our cute Poolhouse in the heart of WeHo.

It’s not always sunny in Southern California

rainingNo I am not talking about the mood we are in or our lifes over here. It’s actually the weather that doesn’t seem to be in a very good mood. This week it sadly changed from sunny, blue skys and hot to rainy, grey and cold. On Sunday we actually were walking on the beach with our shoes off and sweating and now we are kind of floating away here in our little pool house.

Contrary to the weather everything else is kind of going upwards. I had my third job interview this week. Nothing actually happened so far, but before moving out here I actually worried that I won’t be able to get an interview at all. It still is a totally strange feeling to just walk in an american company and do a job interview as if it was nothing unfamiliar. In those moments it really hits me that I now life in a foreign country, where people speak another language and that I am about to stay!

Flo and I didn’t really feel homesick, yet, but that might be due to everything being so new and exciting. I actually am more and more impressed by people who move out here without speaking the language very good every day. I would totally have been too scared to do it and probably would have already left by now. As for us I don’t really feel that we are living in a new world right now. The only thing that really changed so far is the language. And with that I do not have big problems. With the weather on the other hand i do!
