Oscar Night

As all of you probably know the Oscar’s took place in West Hollywood this Sunday night. The Kodak Theatre actually is a 5 minute walk away from our apartment and we didn’t only experience how much buzz this ceremony causes this Sunday. They started preparing the Kodak Theatre at the beginning of this week for the show and traffic on and around the Hollywood Boulevard was pretty crazy.

We watched the show not in West Hollywood but at our friends house in Sherman Oaks. Flo and I actually didn’t watch and even know many of the nominated movies. But we actually watched the show with two people who worked on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and were pretty stocked that “their movie” won the award for best editing (which is what they have worked on).

It actually feels pretty weird to live right next to the famous place where the Oscar’s are being hosted, but on the other hand it is as normal as many other things in LA like for example seeing famous people. I already told you a few of the famous faces we saw in the last year in LA. Last week my boss had Entourage actor Adrian Grenier in the office and surprisingly most of the girls around were pretty bumped by how normal that guy looks. Flo applied for a Freelance Design job on Craigslist the other week, got the job and now designs a Fan shirt for the guy who played the little boy in Poltergeist back in 1982.

Life in LA can feel – especially during the award season – a little weird, but as long as you are not in this industry life continues as usual.

Making Peace with decisions

The other day we went out to dinner with one of our german friends over here. He had moved here a few years ago to be with his girlfriend/now wife. It is always nice to hang out with people that go through the same we do and last time he said something that really made me think. His sister, who lives in Germany, is gonna have a kid soon and I asked him, if he is sad that he will miss out on that child growing up. His answer was no. He said he made peace with his decision to move here a long time ago. There are hard times when you are gonna miss something important or when something bad happens. But you can’t live your life over here giving yourself a hard time about your own decision.

I am totally on the same page with him about this. I still have those moments where I feel guilty, because my decision to move here hurt and still hurts people I love. But how could I cut back on my own dreams only to make other people happy! There will always be moments where I will probably wish to be in Germany. But I can’t make or take back my decision based on these few moments. What important is that Flo and I are going to be happy in the long run. And if taking this big step makes us happy, this is what we have to do and keep on doing.

Accepting our own decision and making peace with it will probably take us a few more months or years. But I know that is what we have to and will do. I mean we love living here, we are happy – and what more could you wish for?! Live is short. But even if some decisions suck and sometimes hurt, if they make you happy you should stick with them!

The unpleasant things in life

I have to admit that in one year in the US I have never been to a doctor of any kind. Because we live in the sunshine state and obviously see and feel the sun a lot, I decided to put a dermatologist visit on my schedule on a regular basis. I searched and asked around for a little bit and got referred to one by my colleague in the end. And on Thursday we finally went to our first doctor’s appointment in the US.

To clear that up: It was just a routine visit, so there is no bad news coming with this (hopefully it’ll stay that way for a long time!). Flo and I both have really good insurance, so we didn’t have to cut back on anything regarding doctors. I was actually not only pleasantly suprised by the really nice doctor’s office, but also by the doctor himself. The guy is really nice and also easy for us to understand!

I always feared going to a doctor. Not only, because I fear it in general, but mostly because I live in a foreign country. But I have to say there is nothing to fear at all, people seem to be understanding of our situation (and our english). I can cross of another first of my list of to dos and I took another step forward in my new life in the US!
