Thank you, Hollywood!

907d9955bd151a5e01626cde8a892440It can be really annoying to live in the middle of Hollywood sometimes. There always seems to be a premiere on Hollywood Boulevard, which means closed roads and for me a hell of a trip back home from work. That can be almost as annoying as the helicopters that sometimes fly over our heads for a whole evening. But living in Hollywood also has its ups! We decided to go out for a little walk and get coffee in the little shopping mall next to the Kodak Theatre today.

Right across the street is the theatre, in which they shoot the Jimmy Kimmel Show. And tonight Jimmy Kimmel had Lady Gaga as a guest and had her perform on an open air stage right behind the theatre. After getting coffee we decided to walk around the theatre and check out if the show was already over. A strange coincidence let us arrive almost the minute Lady Gaga went on stage, so we did not only get coffee tonight but also a free Lady Gaga show on top!

These moments make it feel so unreal to live in the middle of a major city like LA and also in the middle of Hollywood. Back in Cologne it would have been impossible to just walk 10 minutes and be in the middle of a concert screening or a movie premiere. But here it’s almost normal. Thank you for that, Hollywood!

(True) cliché

There is one thing that everyone who lived in the US, would tell you: You will definitely learn to be more open while living here. And yes, I joined their club! We’ve only been here for two months now, but I already can tell that my behaviour when meeting new people totally changed!

Americans may be very ougoing, friendly and even superficial people. But that makes it so much easier to feel welcomed and to connect with other people. I was so worried that we might not get to know any people at all in the beginning. But as always in life fate just pulls you through. We were lucky enough to have the most welcoming and cute landlord for the first two months, who invited us to a weekly dinner party friends of hers are thworing. We went there for the second time yesterday. The first time we’ve been there was three weeks ago and Flo and I didn’t really connect with anyone. But yesterday it was different. We had so much fun, felt so welcome and met so many nice people from all over the world!

Since we’ve been here I’ve notived that it is so sad how we kind of avoided meeting interesting people when living in Germany. Sure, from time to time we met new people through friends in Cologne as well. But even after two months I met so many nice and wonderful people over here, that even that experience alone makes the whole emigration stress worth it!

So to everyone out there: If you are thinking about moving to another country (even if it’s only for a few weeks or months): DO IT! It will definitely help you to be more open-minded and friendly towards strangers. And who knows: Maybe it will get you some new best friends on top!

Merry (white) christmas!

Friday, December 24th, 2010

calendarFirst of all I wanna wish all my readers everywhere in the world a very, very merry christmas and jolly holiays! I hope you all have a wonderful time with your family and your loved ones!

We actually do have a white christmas this year. As a kid I always wished christmas to be white, but now that I am grown up and that it has been snowing for the last four or six weeks, I am kind of sick of snow. It has been snowing till this morning and now we have some kind of ice rain and I am a bit scared that we might not get to my parents house tonight or even worth that we might not get back to Cologne.

This is our last christmas as real germans and I am pretty excited about how it’s gonna be. We will have a pretty big christmas dinner with my and Flo’s parents, my grandma, my brother and his family first. For some of you this might not sound big at all, but for our family’s it kind of is. I hope that there will not be a lot of tears, but I am afraid that there might be, because Flo and I are giving our parents some very emotional presents.

I will tell you more about how christmas went and about how Flo and I try to get some american spirit into christmas this year in the next couple days!

Merry christmas everyone!!!
