Couple Blind Dates

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Today I invented the new term of couple blind dating. I haven’t experienced this thing before I moved to a foreign country. But now it’s kind of a big trend to Flo and me. The easiest explanation to couple blind dating: You meet a couple that you have never met in person before. Either, because you met them via Internet through certain similarities or because mutual friends suggested to meet them.

Today Flo and I had our 4th couple blind date. My friend told me a few months ago that she just found a guy on Google, which she went to college with. And this guy has happened to move to Los Angeles like us. So I contacted him on Facebook and today we finally found time to meet. Flo and I happily do these couple blind dates, because – at least – for us it is kind of difficult to find couples to hang out with over here. Most of the girlfriends I found so far are single. And every married person knows, that besides some amazing girlfriends you also need some couples in your life to be friends with.

Our first couple blind date happened last year, when we met our friends T and H, which Flo got in contact with through our Greencard win. And this went so well and lead to a great friendship, so that we now always appreciate the chance to meet a new couple. To make it short, the couple we met to day is awesome, we had a great brunch and hopefully will see them again. Thanks to my friend K in germany for making that happen. And hurray to our social life finally hitting the fast lane!

Those Days

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Everyone who moved to a foreign country once in his life, might already know what I want to talk about in this post. “those days” are the days that you never want to experience, but no matter how long you have been living abroad – it will always haunt you. Those days are the days, on which you ask yourself what the f*** you are doing. On those days you ask yourself, if you made the right decision and sometimes you even cry. I tend to have those days once every months or a little less. On most of those days I even wake up sad, missing my friends, missing my old life and just feel miserable.

On those days I cant really take myself seriously. Sure, I miss my friends and I miss my old home, but I dont want to change anything right now! I love living here, I love the new friends we found and I love our new life. But you kind of need to have those days because they make you realize that you left something important and that you still care.

I think I will never get rid of those days – and I might not even want to – but it helps a lot to understand whats happening. I actually got warned about those days by our friend Tanja. And now I would like to warn future emmigrants or people who might go through it right now. Dont let those days get you down. Dont let them ruin your dream! Just let them pass and try not to get to sad! Its natural to feel that way, it happens and sometimes it even helps me to not feel that guilty for leaving my friends and family behind.

I love you guys, I miss you and that will never change! No matter where I am!

6 months anniversary

Monday, August 1st, 2011

AnniversaryToday Flo and I have been in the US for 6 months! On January 31 we boarded our plane to the US and look where we’ve come already: Both of us have jobs, we have an apartment, a car, we found friends and we adjusted to life in LA pretty good I would say! Even if there have been some hard hours, tears and bumps during our journey so far, we both are super happy that we decided to take that adventure. We love living over here, we both feel proud of ourselves for what we have achieved so far and most important: We haven’t regreted anything yet!

For everyone who wants to ask us now if it was worth it: It definitely was and still is! We both grew so much through this experience, learnt a lot about ourselves and we grew so much closer! Moving away and starting all over again makes you learn to appreciate the little things in life a lot more and also makes you trust in yourself a lot! We made that all happen, didn’t mess up and I think that’s something to be proud of a lot!

To everyone who has that huge adventure coming up or is right in the middle of it: Enjoy every little step of that journey. Be brave, keep your head up high, stay focused and don’t let anything get you down! If this is your dream, you can make it happen! Like we did! And that feels amazing!
