Do you speak english?

My hubby and me went to the sneak preview at our local cinema this week. They showed “Law Abiding Citizen” with Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx and as they always do at sneak previews over here the movie was in english. I have to say that we do speak and understand english pretty good, but Jamie Foxx was a big challenge for both of us. Which surprised me, because I actually was worried about Gerard Butler, for he is scottish and my hubby always claims that he doesn’t understand british english. Gerard’s english was very German-friendly though. But Jamie Foxx didn’t really have non-native persons in mind when playing that role. I estimate that I didn’t understand about half of what he said perfectly. That was no big deal, because I understood what the movie was about and I could just go home, turn on the TV and understand every single word. But what will be in the future. What will be when we actually live in America? Then I can’t just hang on for the runtime of a movie and then go back to speaking and understanding German. I will have to learn to understand even the hardest accent or the most slurry talk. Even before we knew about that Greencard win we tried to watch movies and TV series in english. And since I am 18 I tried to make sure that every second book I read is in english. I guess that brought us to the level we are on now, which is kind of high, but we have a lot more to learn. Especially on our spoken language. When we were in Florida we always wondered, if the locals noticed that we weren’t American by the way we talked. I guess they did, because although I tried to get used to it, it took me by surprise everyday when strangers asked me “How are you”. I tried to mumble “fine, thanks, how are you” and I didn’t even have to finish this sentence before knewing that the next question would be “where are you from”? I hope I will get used to this immediately when we actually live abroad, but till then the good thing is that I guess I am the nicest customer German store staff can have. Because even if nobody wants me to, I ask how everyone is…
Basically everybody can apply. Use our eligibility check to find out if you qualify for the US GreenCard Lottery.
