The problem with being foreign

I talked with my best friend on Skype yesterday. She lives in London and we don’t manage to speak very often due to the time differences. We hadn’t talked in a little bit, so she asked me how everything is going. I told her about me being a bit homesick lately and about how hard it is for us to find new friends and how much we miss our friends back in Germany.

Just to explain it to you a little bit as well: I find Los Angeles to be a little hard to connect with people. Flo and I are not the most open people (very german I guess) and are actually in a state of our lifes where partying and going out is not our number 1 goal. Due to those circumstances we don’t meet new people very often and can’t always connect to the ones we met, because they are either party animals or trying to network for career purposes. I told my best friend all about that and she said she has that exact same problem in London. I guess we both didn’t chose citys to live in where people actually lan to spend the rest of their lifes. Both LA and London attract a lot young people that are looking for new experiences and also for big careers.

One guy that Flo freelances for told us that he didn’t find friends at all in the three years he lived in LA. Don’t get me wrong: I love LA and I know it’s mostly our fault that we don’t meet new people a lot. But I feel like this city is not for everyone. And we are actually starting to question, if it might be time for us to move on. Maybe to Orange County or maybe a little further away. We will see what the future will bring. It is definitely still a very exciting journey.

Losing weight for LA

scaleYes, we are very excited and happily looking forward to our emigration. No, not every prearrangenement is fun. In preparation for our big adventure – which actually starts in three weeks – we have to go to a lot of doctors to get everything checked up. Two weeks ago I went to the dentist and got the evil tidings that I have to get three of my wisdom teeth pulled out as soon as possible.

This Friday I pulled myself together and went to the doctor to get the first one of them removed. I was soooo afraid, but were actually relieved about how it went. It didn’t hurt at all, but since than I can’t laugh and feel like someone punched me right in the face. The next two teeth will get pulled out in two weeks and now I have to plan all our next organizational steps around those date.

Right now I every day feel like time is ticking so loudly and running by so much faster than normal. When we got home from London this Monday Flo and I both were sick so we lost another week, in which we weren’t able to prepare anything.

I don’t actually panicked, but I kind of feel like there is too little time left to get everything done neatly. On the one hand that is kind of good, because while keeping myself busy I don’t have too much time to think everything through and through again. But on the other hand I only have three weeks left to pack up a whole household, get all the paper work done and say Goodbye to everyone.

I have always been one to work fabulous under stress. And even though this is personal stress, there still are some positive sides to it: Through all the stress and all that being sick, I actually lose some of my winter weight and get ready for LA.

London & 2011 here we come

calendarSo, Flo and me will board a plane to our last vacation before the US tomorrow. We will fly to London for a long New Year’s weekend and visit my best friend Petra and her boyfriend Robert. I am so looking forward to this. Not only because I will see my best friend one last time before our big adventure. But also because this will be our last weekend without organising stuff for our emigration.

Right now – only four weeks before we leave Germany for good – everything centers around the emigration. There is no single day on which the topic won’t come up or on which we don’t have to deal with something regarding the US. So it is nice to have a little and last break in the next days.

Especially because what lies ahead of us. I never had such an exiting year lying ahead of me. So much will happen next year. I really can’t wait for it, but at the same time this huge perspective is kind of scary. Being around Petra right now may be the best thing for both Flo and me, because she already emigrated to two different countries, has no plans on moving back to her home country in the next years and kind of knows how we feel right now and how she can help or just courage us. Also being around her english boyfriend is a good exercise for our english skills.

I will not take my laptop with me to London and will not post a new blog till next week. Therefor I want to wish everyone a very happy New Year’s Eve and a wonderful, exciting and successful 2011! See you on the other side ;)
