Super Bowl

Super BowlToday was our second Super Bowl Sunday as US residents, but our first Super Bowl Sunday that we attended a party on. A friend of ours throw a little Houseparty, which turned out to be more of a come together to eat and drink party. I was pleasantly surprised that none of the people in attendence had either a better understanding or more interest in the sport than we do. It was nice to be able to speak through the whole game, because I honsetly have to say that Football bores me a lot (mostly because I don’t understand the rules).

Because the party was mostly about food, we decided to bring something a little special. I had bought a food magazine with a Super Bowl special in it a few weeks ago and fast found my thing to bring! We made a cheesecake aka Nacho Platter, which is a cheescake with decor that makes it look more than a Nacho dish. It was super easy to make and everyone loved the look and the taste. So food wise we were probably the winner of our first Super Bowl party. Which is kind of funny, because due to the lack of interest for this sport we have, this might be the last one we will attend.

Lost in Excitement

DSC_0202Yes, it is finally official: We are flying to San Francisco in May and will activate our Greencards on May 8. Finding the right flight took us about a week, because it is really hard to find affordable flights, which do not stop over in the US. Why we didn’t want to do this? Because you have to activate the Greencard at your first stop in America. On the internet we read that the activation process can take something between a half and three hours. At the most stop overs you only have like two hours in between your flights, so this was way to risky for us. But we found flights and are very happy with the affordable price. And now that the excitement of finding the right plane is over, I become more and more excited of the journey ahead of us every single minute.

Last time we went to the US the officers at the airport were anything but nice to us. We were very excited back then, because we were visiting our future home country for the first time as a married couple, and we were on our honeymoon, but that didn’t impress the officer a bit. I am very afraid of having an uninterested and bored officer like him again when we land in San Francisco, because that would be kind of scary. I so don’t know what will happen at the airport! The only thing I know is that we have to give them our passports, give them the sealed envelopes, which I by the way would so love to open, and bring our lung scans. But what will happen then? Will those guys ask us questions like they did at the consulate? Will they congrat us on being future US residents? Or will they just be pissed, because we’ll cause them more work than other tourists?

Normally I board a flight and fall asleep just after I finished off the last bite of my meal. But this time I guess I will not close my eyes for a second. And not take my eyes off the mysterious envelopes for a second. Because this mysterious papers contain my future, my dreams and hopefully my luck!

Welcome to the future!

DSC_0007Our first trip to the US as Visa Applicants was our honeymoon. We went to Florida for one week and it kind of felt like a trip to our own future. Okay, we are not planning to move to Florida, but anyway going to America felt like stepping into Doc Brown’s Delorean. It started when we arrived at Miami International Airport. Us waiting in line for the passport control made every officer suspicious. We were giggling like little children, while imagining us standing in line at the US Resident counter next year. On the drive to our hotel I started to pick out the car I want to buy when living in California. And that was just the beginning of our holiday. We couldn’t stop connecting every little cool thing to our life abroad. A trip to the supermarket ended in our little “Do we have this in Germany”-Quiz. It was a joy to watch TV Series like Desperate Housewives in english and “live”. And in the movies our only thought was: “Yes, we don’t have to watch bad translations anymore very soon”! This wasn’t a normal holiday for us. It wasn’t a relaxing honeymoon like it should have been. It was exciting. We actually made plans for our future life. For our American Dream! And when we finally read the word Greencard on an ad on the highway which said that Greencard owners (along with tourists and US residents) were allowed to travel to the Bahamas for a day, we nearly freaked out. The moment we arrived back in Germany depressed us both. For the first time in my life I wasn’t happy to return home. Because in my heart America already kind of feels like home! This makes the decision we both made for our future a bit easier. Yes, it’ll be brutal to leave our families, our friends and our lifes here in Germany, but we already left pieces of our hearts in America and I guess we will have to pick them up very soon! And this actually is the only thought that keeps us going right now: We will be back soon, America!
