Super Bowl

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Super BowlToday was our second Super Bowl Sunday as US residents, but our first Super Bowl Sunday that we attended a party on. A friend of ours throw a little Houseparty, which turned out to be more of a come together to eat and drink party. I was pleasantly surprised that none of the people in attendence had either a better understanding or more interest in the sport than we do. It was nice to be able to speak through the whole game, because I honsetly have to say that Football bores me a lot (mostly because I don’t understand the rules).

Because the party was mostly about food, we decided to bring something a little special. I had bought a food magazine with a Super Bowl special in it a few weeks ago and fast found my thing to bring! We made a cheesecake aka Nacho Platter, which is a cheescake with decor that makes it look more than a Nacho dish. It was super easy to make and everyone loved the look and the taste. So food wise we were probably the winner of our first Super Bowl party. Which is kind of funny, because due to the lack of interest for this sport we have, this might be the last one we will attend.

1 year American Dream

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

This Tuesday was Flo and my’s one year US anniversary. We went to Eva Longoria’s Restaurant Beso in West Hollywood to celebrate this special occasion! For us this is not only a huge thing, because it’s already been a year. It’s mostly a great anniversary, because the last year overall was just amazing! I hoped for it to be good and for everything to go as we wanted it to. But it actually just went way better than I could have imagined.

We both have good jobs, a cute apartment, awesome new friends, health insurance, a nice car and are in love with LA! We also actually already saved as much money as we spent for the whole move over here. It’s kind of crazy to see how good everything turned out and to know how happy we both are over here! I feel like this was just meant to be!

For sure the last year wasn’t only great. There were hard moments like missing our family and friends, being lonely in a new city, having to deal with building a new life, language barriers and so on. But with a little patience and some strong will we made it through all of this! I am incredibly proud of what we both achieved in the last year. And I am really happy we decided to make this big step!

Dreams are there to be lived! And that is what we did, still do and hopefully will do for many more years! So far I can definitely say: Our personal American Dream did come true!

Panic mode turned off

Monday, January 9th, 2012

In my first months in the USA I was terrified to be alone with an American. Not alone like being in the elevator with someone. But alone like in the car with someone or alone getting lunch with a colleague. I was always afraid to not being able to understand that someone, not being able to keep a conversation going or just afraid of talking weird english. I was equally terrified to meet new people.

I don’t know when it happened, but this week I realized that I haven’t felt like this in a long time. If I get to drive one of my colleagues home after work, I actually enjoy the conversation and don’t even think about how my english might sound. Also meeting new people is no longer a stressful situation, but a really nice and exciting thing to do.

I actually believe that this kind of makes the US more home to me than a comfortable apartment for example can. Because without feeling comfortable speaking a new language and without being comfortable talking to the people that surround you, I don’t think you can call a place home! At least to me the fact that my panic mode is no longer turned on means the world! And it also makes me feel proud. Proud of being able to say I let my guard down and through that not even gained a whole lot of confidence, but also new friends!
