North Dakota

North Dakota

The name Dakota derived from the Native Americans culture of the Dakota (a dialect of the Sioux), before they were expelled from the state by the Americans.
North Dakota was announced 39th state of the Union in 1889.
The capital Bismarck is an important trace centre for cereal and cattle. The industry produces and sells mainly agricultural machines, food and steel. Mentionable are the State Capitol and the North Dakota Heritage Centre (history of the Great Plains).
In the south of Bismarck the Native American reservation Standing Rock is located, where the chief Sitting Bull was killed on December, 5th 1890.
The community of Bismarck was founded in 1872 by the white population. The community was named after the Reich Chancellor Otto von Bismarck to attract German investors. After discovering gold in 1874 Bismarck developed to an important centre of equipment and transport for the gold diggers and became capital of Dakota in 1883 and later on capital of North Dakota after the division of Dakota into two states.
50.000 out of 640.000 inhabitants of North Dakota live in Bismarck.
Mentionable are the Theodore-Roosevelt national park and the area around the Red River Valley, where you can enjoy the remarkable countryside.
Since the 1980´s especially young people migrate to other states, which led to a dramatic reduction of the population. A reason for the migration is the lack of qualitative job offers for university graduates.
